The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has embarked on Schools’ advocacy/enlightenment campaign across the six Education Districts as part of efforts to ensure that the State is free of waterborne diseases.
The General Manager of the Agency, Engr. Adebola M. Matanmi, while flagging off the campaign at Education District II in Maryland, Ikeja, said the School Advocacy is scheduled to run for three weeks at the district from Wednesday, 3rd to Wednesday, 17th March 2021 before the team moves to another district.
He explained that the focus of the campaign is to educate the students on the proper management and disposal of wastewater to prevent contamination of surface and underground water with a view to promoting and protecting public health.
“The students would be educated and enlightened to understand that improper disposal of wastewater will lead to contamination of water, which would possibly find its way to our homes either through borehole or public water service. Wastewater usually generated goes back to aquifer where boreholes and public water service source the water that runs through our taps,” Matanmi said.
He explained that the first week of the campaign commenced with a visit to six schools which included Evans Adelaja Model College, Angus Senior Secondary School, Shomolu Senior School, Oduduwa Junior Secondary School, Jagunmolu Girls Senior Grammar and Lanre Awolokun Senior Grammar School all within Shomolu Local Government Area of District II.
Informing that the Agency’s Campaign team will proceed to Ikorodu Local Government in the second week and round off the advocacy at Kosofe Local Government in the third week, Matanmi said the team would also empower the students and equip the schools’ libraries with handbooks and other souvenirs to promote awareness about wastewater and water-borne diseases.
