The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Gubernatorial candidate Professor Uchenna Ikonne has died barely five weeks into the general election.

The passing away of the PDP’s governorship flagbearer was announced by his son Chikezie Uche-Ikonne in a statement he released to the BBC Pidgin on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

The statement reads in part: “I regret to announce the death of my dear father, Prof Eleazar Uchenna Ikonne, who died at the National Hospital Abuja today, 25th January 2023 by 4am after a brief illness.”

The late professor suffered from a brief illness and later died at the national hospital in Abuja during the early hours of Wednesday.

His son Chikezie disclosed that his father has been getting better after receiving treatment in the United Kingdom but the sickness relapsed a few days to his death.

He further revealed that his father had suffered multiple cardiac arrests before losing the battle to the illness by 4 am on Wednesday.

The gubernatorial aspirant has been absent from campaign rallies due to the state of his health.
