Breaking News: ‘Area Boys’ Unleash Mayhem in Obalende

Residents and traders in Lagos Island are reportedly living in fear as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, are said to be in an exchange of fire with the Police at Obalende. On the one hand, some report that this is a clash between NURTW officials and the Police while another story reports that rival groups of the NURTW are involved in the clash.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that officers of the Nigerian Army from Dodan Barracks have reportedly occupied the area where ‘area boys’ have unleashed mayhem this morning.

Gunshots can be heard in the background in videos trending on social media, along with motorcyclists and pedestrians running for their lives, and some commercial vehicles destroyed.

According to a Twitter user, the riots had started over the weekend in Agarawu, Sura and Adeniji Adele areas.

A Twitter user wrote, “The fight between national n road union has caused serious traffic from obalende bridge inward onikan roundabout, inward n outward awolowo road is very busy,

@AbassOyeyemi said, “Insecurity in Lagos has skyrocketed. Especially on the Island. Crazy shooting by NURTW guys going on at Obalende. This is just after about four days of shootings at Adeniji Adele. Thank God for life.”
