DSS confirms arrest of suspended CBN governor, Emefiele

The Department of State Services (DSS) have confirmed that Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody as investigations surrounding some of his activities continues.

The DSS made the announcement on its Twitter handle Saturday afternoon following speculation about the arrest in the media.

The DSS enjoined the media to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning this.

The statement was signed by Peter Afunanya, the spokesman of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Just about the time of the tweet, a video went viral which shows Emefiele alighting from a white Toyota pick-up van at an airport and he was escorted away by men holding handcuffs and led into a waiting private jet.

Acting CBN Governor Appointed

The Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Willie Bassey in a statement on Friday, announced Emefiele’s suspension.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect. This is a sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy,” the statement said.

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) [Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi], who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”
