Edo, Osun crashes claim three, seven injured in Lagos

Two persons were said to have died on Sunday night as the car they were travelling in plunged into a river at Ikpoba Hill in the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

An eyewitness told PUNCH Metro that the vehicle was travelling from Ring Road towards Ramat Park at top speed before the driver lost control and hit the kerb before it plunged into the river.

Confirming the incident, the state Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Oreva Ukoh, who spoke through Theresa Momoh, a staff officer of the Public Education Department, said the occupants of the vehicle were returning from a party on Sunday night when the accident occurred.

She said, “Two persons were involved in the accident, one male adult and a female adult. They died in the river before help could reach them.

“It is obvious that the man, who was the driver, was at a high speed because that night, there were few road users on that road, so he probably had the whole road to himself.”

In Osun State, one person was confirmed dead, while some others were injured in a crash that involved a truck laden with granite in Ikirun.

An eyewitness said the truck emerged from the Obaagun end of Ila/Ikirun Road some minutes past 1pm on Monday and was descending the slope towards Akinrun’s Palace gate when the accident occurred.

The truck was suspected to have experienced brake failure, forcing the driver to crush a man said to be a commercial motorcyclist.

Some others were also said to have been injured and some vehicles were damaged.

Speaking on the accident, the state command’s Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kehinde Adeleke, said, “At about 1.35pm, a truck loaded with granite had a brake failure at Oja-Oba in Ikirun and claimed one life identified as Mukaila Okedowo, a commercial motorcycle rider.”

Also in Lagos, no fewer than seven people were injured on Monday after a blue Mazda bus crashed in the Abule-Egba area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident happened around 10am between the Super and Ile-Epo areas of the community.

An eyewitness said the inter-state bus which was conveying passengers from Abeokuta to Iyana Ipaja lost control while trying to avoid a BRT that drove out from its lane.

He said, “The bus had dropped off a passenger at Super and was heading towards Ile-Epo when a BRT bus exited its lane into the main road. But the commercial bus was already at a top speed also close to the BRT bus.

“That was how it lost control, somersaulted and crashed into a wall in the process. It had just seven passengers in it and all of them sustained serious injuries.”

In a video trending online, some of the victims were seen sitting on the floor and writhing in pain.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Transport Management Authority, Taofiq Adebajo, said the accident victims were rushed to a nearby hospital.

“Our men were on the ground when the incident happened and they were able to coordinate how the victims were moved from the scene to the general hospital. They also handed the mangled vehicle to the Ile-Epo Police Division,” Adebajo said.
