“From Claudio Ranieri to Graham Potter” – How Many Coaches has Chelsea Sacked Since 2003?

Graham Potter was ruthlessly dismissed by new owner Todd Boehly after losing 2-0 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Todd Boehly has fired his manager for the second time since taking over full ownership from Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

Graham Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea’s head coach after the German was sacked by the club’s new owners just three months after formally taking over the club.

Despite his five-year contract, Potter left the club just seven months after being appointed on September 8, after winning only seven of 22 Premier League games.

Chelsea Football Club, one of the most successful English football clubs of the last two decades, has seen many managers come and go since Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003.

The club has gone through an unprecedented number of coaches over the years, with many leaving after just a short stint in charge.

To date, Chelsea has sacked 15 managers since 2003, with Claudio Ranieri being the first to leave. Ranieri was dismissed in May 2004, despite leading the club to second place in the Premier League and the semi-finals of the Champions League. This decision set the tone for the many manager sackings that were to follow.

Following Ranieri’s departure, the likes of Jose Mourinho (twice), Avram Grant, Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez, Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri, and Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel, Garham Potter have all been hired and subsequently fired by the club.

The most recent of these, Potter, was sacked in April 2023, just 7 months after being appointed as Chelsea’s head coach.

Despite the high turnover of managers, Chelsea has managed to maintain a high level of success on the field, winning numerous domestic and European trophies over the past two decades.

However, this success has often come at a high price, with some of the club’s most popular managers being let go prematurely due to a lack of patience from the board.

The constant upheaval in the managerial department has also led to concerns about the stability of the club and its long-term future.

Many fans and commentators believe that the club needs to establish a more sustainable approach to management if it is to achieve sustained success both on and off the field.

In conclusion, Chelsea’s managerial history since 2003 is characterized by a significant number of dismissals, with many coaches being let go after just a short period in charge.

While this approach has yielded significant success on the field, it has also raised concerns about the club’s stability and long-term future. Whether the club will change its approach to management in the future remains to be seen.
