HUDE NNAMDI IS BEING INVESTIGATED FOR CYBERSTALKING – POLICE

Police have confirmed that social media influencer and staunch supporter of Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Chude Nnamdi, with Twitter handle ‘@chude__’ is in its custody following his arrest for alleged cybercrime.

Spokesperson for the Nigeria Police, Muyiwa Adejobi, said this in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

e confirmed that Chude was arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State on Saturday, 18 March, 2023 for alleged cybercrime.

He added that the social media influencer is being investigated by the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) Abuja, for cyberstalking based on petition about his activities on social media.

Specifically, he said Chude is being investigated for contravention of the provision of Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 and other criminal laws.

He added that a prima facie case has been established against Chude, while the case file has been forwarded to the Force Legal Department for further action.

Adejobi also urged members of the public to familiarize themselves with provisions of the law and be aware of the penalties for violating them most especially cybercrime laws with the new trends in the digital media space.

Recall that Peter Obi had on Tuesday called for release of Chude, who was allegedly arrested for attacking Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo in a series of tweet.

The social media influencer had allegedly accused Soludo of masterminding rigging of last Saturday’s house of assembly election in Anambra in favour of his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

He tweeted that the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had brought the state back to the era of ballot box snatching during the recently concluded state election.

Chude was arrested by the Cyber Crime Unit of Interpol in Anambra and taken to Abuja the following day.

However, Obi in series of Tweets on Tuesday, said after due enquiries, he regretted to say that the arrest of Chude was a further confirmation of Nigeria’s poor and declining performance in the rule of law, voice and accountability, and other governance indicators.

“Citizens will have their different thoughts on us and we have the right to reply. Arbitrary use of our office or in unrestrained way will do no one any good, including those in authority.

“I therefore appeal to all concerned to please treat the issue most objectively on rule of law, and compassionately release the young man in question. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
