Oshoala makes history as Barcelona wins UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time

Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala has become the first African player to win the women’s UEFA Champions League after Barcelona Femeni thrashed Chelsea 4-0.

With this win, Barcelona also becomes the first Spanish team to win the trophy.

Oshoala came off the bench in the 71st minute for Jennifer Hermoso. The Super Falcons captain scored in added time but the goal was ruled offside.

Oshoala contributed 4 goals in 9 matches for her side in this season’s Champions League as she became the first African winner of the competition ever, adding to her record as the only African finals scorer in the history of the competition when she scored in the final against PSG in 2019 and the first African to play in two Champions League finals.

Before the game in Gothenburg, the four-time African Women’s Player of the Year claimed that Barca had learned from their final defeat to Lyon in 2019.

“Now, we have the experience of how European football is and also how a top game like this is played,” she told the media. I think we’re going to be better with our tactics this year, how we go out and play and everything.

“For us, it was good. We played in the final 2019, we lost and then we picked up corrections from there. Come May 16, against Chelsea, I don’t think we’re going to make the same mistakes again, because we already learned from the past. We are a better team now than we were two years ago.”.
